SUMMER READS

My goal is to read more on my summer vacations rather than watch a lot of DVDs. (Although I do plan on bringing 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' to share with my seven year old nephew.)

During the two blocks of two week vacations, I'm already planning on finishing "All-Consuming Fire" which teamed up Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson with the Seventh Incarnation of the Doctor from 'Doctor Who'. And then there's "Mirkwood" a novel about J.R.R. Tolkien.

This may make a nice companion piece to the latter.....

COMING THIS FALL TO "DOCTOR WHO"

The first half of the season has ended for 'Doctor Who', and I just figured that there would be a break in the coming attractions videos for the show until Autumn. But the good folks at the BBC have presented us with a bit of a teaser to whet our appetites. (As if the episode title for the return wasn't enough - "Let's Kill Hitler"!)

When it comes to stirring up the fanbase, ya gotta hand it to 'em!

AS SEEN ON TV: STAN LAUREL

Today, "Bloomsday" in the literary universe, is my brother Andrew's birthday here in the Trueniverse. I would happily embarrass him by proclaiming how old he is, were it not for the fact that I am twelve years his senior.

So in honor of my youngest brother, today's ASOTV Showcase features one of the greatest celebrities to share his birthday.....

STAN LAUREL

AS SEEN IN:
"Stan"

AS PLAYED BY:
Jim Norton

The one-hour teleplay, based on a radio drama, was about Stan's visit to "Babe" one last time after he suffered a massive stroke, with flashbacks to their past together.  (Not mentioned was the involvement of a certain Time Lord in one of their movies.)

From Wikipedia:
Arthur Stanley "Stan" Jefferson (16 June 1890 – 23 February 1965), better known as Stan Laurel, was an English comic actor, writer and film director, famous as the first half of the comedy team Laurel and Hardy. His film acting career stretched between 1917 and 1951 and included a starring role in the Academy Award winning film The Music Box (1932). In 1961, Laurel was given a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award for his pioneering work in comedy. He has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7021 Hollywood Blvd.
In May 1954, Oliver Hardy had a heart attack and canceled the tour [of Europe]. In 1955, they were planning to do a television series, 'Laurel and Hardy's Fabulous Fables', based on children's stories, but the plans were delayed after Laurel suffered a stroke, from which he recovered. But as he was planning to get back to work, Oliver Hardy had a massive stroke on 15 September 1956.  Paralyzed and bedridden for several months, Hardy was unable to speak or move.

On 7 August 1957, Oliver Hardy died. Laurel did not attend his funeral, stating "Babe would understand". People who knew Laurel said he was absolutely devastated by Hardy's death and never fully recovered for the rest of his life.

In 1961, Stan Laurel was given a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award for his pioneering work in comedy. He had achieved his lifelong dream as a comedian and had been involved in nearly 190 films. He lived his final years in a small apartment in the Oceana Hotel in Santa Monica, California.

Always gracious to fans, he spent much time answering fan mail. His phone number was listed in the telephone directory, and fans were amazed that they could dial the number and speak to Stan Laurel. Dick Van Dyke told a similar story: When Van Dyke was just starting his career, he looked up Laurel's phone number, called him, and then visited him at his home.
Laurel was a heavy smoker until suddenly giving up when he was about seventy years of age. He died on 23 February 1965, aged 74, several days after suffering a heart attack. Just minutes away from death, Laurel told his nurse he would not mind going skiing right at that very moment. Somewhat taken aback, the nurse replied that she was not aware that he was a skier. "I'm not," said Laurel, "I'd rather be doing that than this!" A few minutes later the nurse looked in on him again and found that he had died quietly.

"If anyone cries at my funeral, I will never speak to him again."

O'BSERVATIONS: WHO ALUMNI

Along with John Fraser as Dixon Druce in the "Madame Sara" episode of 'The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes' were two major players in the 'Doctor Who' cast of characters.

Caroline Johns played the doomed Edith Dallas. She was probably the Doctor's most capable and efficient Companions during the course of the series, working with the Third Incarnation of the Gallifreyan Time Lord.

As Edith's much older half-brother, Roger Delgado may have had no choice but to exude that air of villainy. He was the first - and best! - incarnation of the Doctor's arch-nemesis, the Master. But by first, I mean he was the first that we met, but he was the last incarnation from the natural regenerations granted to a Time Lord (at that time). There should have been twelve more incarnations before him.
Funny thing was, Delgado's performance never made me think of the Master. However, because he was in a wheelchair, Davros came to mind....

SKED ALERT - "GAME OF THRONES" (THE PENULTIMATE EPISODE)

I didn't get any notice this week from the PR people of HBO about clips and stills from Episode 9 of 'Game Of Thrones' which airs tonight on the premium network. I hope I didn't insult them in any way with my previous posts on the show. 'Game Of Thrones' is easily my favorite series of 2011 and it will figure heavily in the Toobits Awards at the end of the year.

It could be that my theories of how the land of Westeros called the planet Mondas home had something to do with that. Or more likely, the series is doing so well by now that they don't need to have bloggers like me trumpet its arrival.

No matter. HBO does have the preview video up on YouTube:

The episode is called "Baelor".......

Episode 9 of 'Game of Thrones' premieres tonight on HBO at 9 PM, EDT.

And if the show follows the HBO tradition, the first season finale will be pre-empted next week.....

TARDIS-BIRDS ARE GO!

You're free to watch the entire video if you'd like; 'The Thunderbirds' are still fun after all these years. But I want to direct your attention to a certain piece of equipment that takes center stage two minutes and ten seconds into the video....

Although there are living puppets on Earth Prime-Time, with many of them tucked away Yazoo, the Living Island - the puppets' reservation, in a way - I also think there may be an alternate TV dimension in which the dominant life form is represented in puppetry. This would be the world of Supermarionation, where most of the characters from Gerry Anderson's TV series could be found.

And if so, I don't know if the Professor could be the puppet version of the Doctor, but he's more than likely some Gallifreyan Time Lord, perhaps even the puppet Master......

Sorry about that, Chief.

MISSING LINKS: THE MIRROR OF PORTUGAL

Horace Dorrington was considered one of 'The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes' in Toobworld, whose exploits were first chronicled in a series of stories by Arthur Morrison. As a private investigator, he was corrupt, amoral, and on at least one occasion, a murderer. He could be relied upon to solve his cases, if only that, but always as a means to lining his pockets with more than his established fee with the client.

Wold Newton scholar Rick Lai considers Dorrington to have been the third most dangerous man in London, after Professor Moriarty and Colonel Moran from the Sherlock Holmes canon.
In one of his cases (set in 1895 as per the TV series, if not the original stories), Dorrington was hired to retrieve the fabled Mirror of Portugal, a diamond thought lost since the French Revolution. Until recently it was passed down through the generations of his client but it was stolen from around his neck. Dorrington tracked down the thief to be a Mr. Hamer, who shared an office with the client.

Dorrington forced Hamer and his wife to take him to where the diamond was kept, but it turned out Mrs. Hamer had it on her all the time. And when they reached the Thames, she threw the legendary stone into the river - if she couldn't have it, then no one would. After first insuring that he had collected his fee from his client, he then told the man and his brother where it could be found... which is all that he had been contracted to do.
And so the Mirror of Portugal lay at the bottom of the Thames, slowly sinking into the mire of the sediment, for over one hundred years. But then in 2006, a strange occurrence happened - the Thames River suddenly drained off, near to where the diamond lay in the muck.
In order to save the Earth from the resurgence of the Racnoss spider empire, the Gallifreyan Time Lord known as the Doctor opened a floodgate that caused the surging waters to cascade down into the center of the Earth where the clutch of spider eggs were just hatching after being dormant since the formation of the planet.
It wasn't just water that flowed down into that shaftway, but the muck and the mire and all the detritus to be found in the Thames. And that included the Mirror of Portugal.....

MY BIRTHDAY RANT

BBC-America made a big mistake in bumping 'Doctor Who' on Memorial Day Weekend. The core fan base would have watched no matter where they were or what plans they had. DVR recordings are factored in nowadays.

So now I'm sure their ratings for the last two episodes of this first half of the season will probably dip because eager fans sought other outlets to catch those episodes as quickly as possible.

This was probably true with the mid-season cliffhanger finale, when many such fans were probably watching "A Good Man Goes To War" hours before "The Almost People" aired on BBC-America!

Not that I know of such things......

SUPER-SIX LIST: LIFE GOES ON

With Ted Buckland, formerly of 'Scrubs', showing up in Hawaii on the season finale of 'Cougar Town', we got yet another affirmation of one of the basic tenets of Toobworld - just because a TV show may be cancelled, that doesn't mean the lives of its characters have ended. Usually they continue, but out of sight of the audience from the Trueniverse. Occasionally, however, they reappear in a totally different show where we can get reacquainted with them and catch up on what they've been doing during those days of their lives.

So here's a Super Six List of TV characters who reappeared in other shows - for the most part, these shows had no connection to their previous home series.

1] DETECTIVE JOHN MUNCH
From 'Homicide: Life On The Street' to 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'

There was a crossover history between H:LOTS and the mothership of the L&O franchise, and on a personal level it turned out that NYPD Detective Jerry Briscoe once dated one of the Munchkin's wives. When the Baltimore series ended, Munch was dumped by his current wife and he decided to retire from the force there and move to New York City, where he got a job with the SVU.

John Munch is the Crossover King of Toobworld, having also appeared in 'The X-Files', 'The Beat', 'The Wire', working undercover on 'Arrested Development' and in the Tooniverse thanks to 'The Simpsons'.

2] ALAN BRADY
From 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' to 'Mad About You'
There was a span of over thirty years between the show biz legend's appearances in the main Toobworld. (We prefer to ignore his foray into the Tooniverse.) But the years had not diminished his acerbic megalomania. Thanks to Paul Buchman hiring him to narrate a documentary on TV comedy, we learned about some of the salacious details in his Catskills past, as well as getting confirmation about Milton Berle's... talents. ("It's true....!")

3] KOR, KOLOTH, & KANG
From 'Star Trek' to 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'

The first three Klingons in the 'Star Trek' franchise, these three Ancients reunited with Dax, their Trill blood-brother (now symbiotically housed in Jadzia) to exact revenge on an alien villain who murdered their god-child. Although they were successful, two of the three didn't make it; that's all I'm sayin'.

The time span between their appearances was about the same as that of Alan Brady's - in real time, that is. In Toobworld time, over eighty years passed before we saw them again. And it then took an episode of 'Enterprise' to splain why they looked differently from their original appearances.

4] CINNAMON CARTER, JOE MANNIX, & BEN MATLOCK
From 'Mission: Impossible' to 'Diagnosis Murder'
From 'Mannix' to 'Diagnosis Murder'
From 'Matlock' to 'Diagnosis Murder'
In its framework as a medical drama, 'Diagnosis Murder' was mostly a murder mystery. And thanks to writers like Lee Goldberg, there were some crossovers with other TV series. When the father of one of Dr. Sloan's team turned out to be a spy and in trouble, they consulted with Cinnamon who had long since retired from service with the IMF. When private eye Joe Mannix had to re-investigate an old case from his own series, he turned to his personal physician to help tie up the loose ends. (Mark Sloan treated Mannix for all those gun shots and conks to the head. One thing you don't want to see in Toobworld - the shaved head of Joe Mannix!)

And finally, Ben Matlock reluctantly traveled to California from Georgia for Mark Sloan's help, even though the doctor once gave him bad financial advice (which led to Matlock always wearing those cheap suits and noshing on hot dogs.) Within the Toobworld reality, I found it strange that Matlock never noticed Dr. Mark Sloan's resemblance to a judge he knew who had committed a murder......

5] COLONEL WILHELM KLINK & THE PENGUIN
From 'Hogan's Heroes' to 'Batman'

From 'Batman' to 'The Monkees'

There's no connection between these two, really, save that they were both cameos outside their expected venues which eventually connect to each other. Klink showed up in the 1960's in a building which the dynamic duo was scaling. Since he looked no older than he did when he was incompetently in charge of a POW camp more than twenty years before, it's the Toobworld Central theory that he served as the guinea pig for the suspended animation process that was later used to freeze the Fuehrer (as seen in 'The Adventures of Fu Manchu' and 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.')
As for the Penguin, it looks as though he once again escaped from the Gotham Penitentiary and then traveled to Hollywood for a bit of relaxation before once again attempting a crime spree in Gotham City.

6] CAPTAIN KANGAROO
From 'The Captain Kangaroo Show' to 'Day By Day' and 'Murphy Brown'
His own show was no longer entertaining the small fry in the morning - too much advertising revenue could be made instead from talk shows and to hell with the kids! But the Captain still was able to serve as an ambassador at large for their concerns across the country. (Even if his noble intentions were twisted for Murphy Brown's own needs.)

I had to draw the line at some point or it wouldn't have been a Super Six List.  And even then, I cheated with the entry for Colonel Klink and the Penguin, maybe even with the Klingons.  But I could also have added in Sarah Jane Smith, from 'Doctor Who' to 'K-9 And Company' to 'The Sarah Jane Adventures'.  But 'Doctor Who' gets a lot of coverage in this blog so I thought it best to give a showcase to the others.

A QUINN MARTIN-STEVEN MOFFAT M*A*S*H-UP

I know American "Who" fans are going through withdrawal this weekend since BBC-America pre-empted 'Doctor Who' for Memorial Day Weekend content, and in the middle of a two-parter at that. So here's another video to help stem the cravings.....

I could have asked for a better voice-over, one more in keeping with that original deep voice. And it probably should have been a mash-up in the titles as well - it should have been "Barnaby Who". But otherwise, the 'Barnaby Jones' theme music makes everything better.

And at least thanks to this mash-up, I now know why the character of Jorah Marmont in 'Game Of Thrones' looks so familiar to me. I really liked Bishop Octavian in that "Weeping Angels" two-parter and I still hold out hope that the angel didn't kill him; rather it sent him back in Time. We may yet meet him again in 'Doctor Who'.....

OUTER SPACE OUT-TAKES WITH THE DOCTOR

Usually on the Saturday of our Video Weekend, we offer up some clips from that night's episode of 'Doctor Who' to whet your appetite. However, at least here in America, there won't be a new episode of the show because apparently we're all watching war movies and other TV marathons in honor of Memorial Day. So I'll hold off on all the clips available for "The Almost People" until next Saturday.

Instead, here is the blooper reel to found on the DVD boxed set for Matt Smith's first season as the Doctor. (I'll leave the actual numbering of the season/series for the show overall up to you to argue about.....

"LO:LA" - A MIXED-UP, MUDDLED-UP, SHOOK-UP TOOBWORLD

'Law & Order: Los Angeles' ends its run on June 27th......

It wasn't around for very long, less than a full seaon, but in its disrupted, revamped run, 'Law & Order: Los Angeles' displayed the spectrum of the population for the City of Angels: Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, immigrants, rich, poor, religious fanatics, the homeless, and members of the LGBT community. But there was one group of L.A.'s society that was never represented in any of the episodes.

The Tenctonese.

The Tenctonese, an alien race derisively called Slags and Spongeheads by the native human population, landed on Earth Prime-Time in the early 1990s, just outside the Los Angeles area. Over 300,000 of them had been held captive aboard a slaver ship but had rebelled, forcing the ship to land in the desert. When we first saw them in the TV series 'Alien Nation', it was around the year 1995 (although the series aired earlier in the real world).

By the time the series started, the Tenctonese had established themselves as part of the Los Angeles population (although not fully accepted), not partitioned away like the Prawns in "District 9". But I don't think many ventured farther than California, to other states in America, in their expansion.
Since the series ended after its first season, the Tenctonese should have been at least visible in background scenes in other TV shows that were set in Los Angeles - or so it would be if this was a perfect Toobworld. I'm not saying that a whole plotline from 'Law & Order: Los Angeles' had to be about the Tenctonese, but why didn't we see any at crime scenes as police officers (if not detectives like George Francisco)? As bystanders at those crime scenes? Or back at the headquarters for the district attorney, working as members of the secretarial pool at least?

Dick Wolf certainly missed an opportunity with the casting of Corey Stoll......

Sorry about that, Chief.....
Why haven't we seen the Tenctonese in shows like 'Arrested Development' and 'The Bold & The Beautiful'? In the jury pool of 'Murder One', in the audience at a late night taping as seen on 'The Larry Sanders Show', or even a deceased Tenctonese being prepared for viewing on 'Six Feet Under'? Once 'Columbo' returned to the airwaves in 1989, we could have seen a few of these aliens in some of the later episodes, and along the same lines, in one of the TV movie reunions for 'The Rockford Files'. (Although I think they would have avoided Jim's trailer on the beach since the combination of salt and water is deadly to them, which could have led to a murder mystery investigated by Dr. 'Bones' Brennan.)

The Tenctonese could have been buying their variant of 'Weeds' in Agrestic (although sour milk is their drug of choice.)  Wouldn't they be perfect as the focus in a 'Fringe' case, or one of 'The X-Files'? And if there was one place in Southern California where they would not seem out of place, it would have been Sunnydale (as seen in 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'.)
But in those fifteen years since we know they were well-ensconced in the area, those oversized, spotted craniums without ears are nowhere to be seen in the state.

I think there can be only one splainin - somehow they were all loaded up into another space-ship (or their original one was refitted and made space-worthy again) and transported to a new world on which they could recreate their former lives on Tencton.

It may even be that the Gallifreyan Time Lord known as the Doctor got involved, preferably the Eighth incarnation seen in "Doctor Who - The Movie". That old girl the TARDIS could have taken them all to a new planet somewhere in the galaxy. As big as it was on the inside, it may still have needed a few trips to get the job done, but the Doctor could have played the part of the ferryman in less than a day.
A few Tenctonese may still be around on the main Toobworld, even whole families, and I think at the very least every one that was part of the main cast on the 'Alien Nation' TV series would have chosen to stay behind (just in case any more TV movies should occur.) But otherwise this will stand as the Toobworld Central position on the matter - the majority of their species departed Earth Prime-Time to lived elsewhere among the stars.

Each episode of 'Law & Order: Los Angeles' was named after a different location in the Los Angeles area - "Echo Beach", "Hayden Tract", "Zuma Canyon", etc. If they had done an episode involving the Tenctonese, they would have had two options: "Little Tencton" or "Slagtown".....

THEORIES OF RELATEEVEETY: YO, ADRIAN!!!!

One of my theories of relateeveety offered a link between 'My Boys' and 'Doctor Who', based on the extended family tree for two characters played by O.T. Fagbenle.

It looks like I may be able to expand that theoretical connection to now include 'Happy Endings'.

First off, an easy one - both 'Happy Endings' and 'My Boys' take place in Chicago.

Dez was the British-born husband of Wendy, Brendon's ex-girlfriend, and he owned a trendy a bar. But since we saw him last, and since 'My Boys' sadly was cancelled, what's he been up to? Just because the show was over, as everybody should know about Toobworld by now, that doesn't mean his life was over as well.

I think we can make the claim that the character played by O.T. Fagbenle on 'Happy Endings' was Dez from 'My Boys'.

Considering Adrian was single, gay, and working for the Chicago Bears, that's gonna take a whole lotta splainin to do......

First off, his name:
It could be that his full name was Desmond Adrian or Adrian Desmond.... whatever his last name may have been. Or maybe one of those two names was his actual last name, probably Desmond. And "Dez" was a nickname. Once he came out of the closet and broke up with Wendy, he decided to re-invent himself. Going by his first name of "Adrian" was the first step.

As to his sexual orientation:
Perhaps he could no longer live a lie and confessed all to Wendy. This would probably lead to her breaking up with him, forcing him to live with his bartender friend (whom we met in the 'Happy Endings' episode.)

And for his change in occupation:
Since we saw his character in 2008, a lot could have happened in three years besides the new lifestyle. In the divorce settlement, maybe Wendy got custody of that trendy bar, leaving Dez - er, Adrian - without a source of income.

It could have led to a whole new episode of 'My Boys' where, of all people, Brendan took pity on the guy who landed his ex. Maybe Brando coaxed P.J. and Mike to pull a few strings, call in a few favors, and land the guy a job for one of the Windy City's sports teams. And to complicate matters, as sitcom plots should, he ended up getting a job that Mike would have wanted.

And eventually, it would all lead to Adrian meeting Max and asking him out for a date......
It's not as twisty a piece of pretzel logic as it could have been, and jackLord knows I've sometimes put my back out trying to splain things away. So as far these two one-shot characters are concerned, where's the harm in thinking they're one and the same?

And please - don't question how it would still lead to Adrian "Dez" Desmond being the ancestor for "Other Dave". Gays can have kids too, ya know.

'Happy Endings' - "The Girl With The David Tattoo"

'My Boys' - "The Shirt Contest"

'Doctor Who' - "Silence In The Library"/"Forest Of The Dead"
