New York gay marriage bill passes

Striking what advocates believe is a historic victory for gay rights, the New York state senate Friday approved same-sex marriage, bringing New York a promised governor’s signature away from being the sixth and largest state to allow gays and lesbians to marry.
The 33-29 vote is an enormous victory for first-year Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat who pledged during last fall’s campaign to push for gay marriage. It comes after an intense public and private lobbying campaign from a wide cast of politicians, celebrities and athletes, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former President Bill Clinton.

Cuomo, whose two daughters attended the vote in the senate gallery, is expected to sign the bill. The bill will become law 30 days after Cuomo signs it.
After weeks of suspense, Stephen Saland, a Poughkeepsie Republican announced himself on the senate floor as the 32nd senator to back the legislation, tipping the balance in favor of it passing. Saland defined his vote as a matter of conscience during a stirring legal defense of an amendment exempting religious organizations from the law.

Jon Stewart LIVE On Fox News, Tells Host 'You're Insane'

The Daily Show's Jon Stewart entered the proverbial lion's den, appearing live on Fox News Sunday to debate "media bias" with host Chris Wallace.
Early in the interview, Wallace flashed a previous quote of Stewart's calling Fox News a "relentless agenda-driven 24 hour news opinion propaganda delivery system," and asked Stewart, "Where do you come up with this stuff?"
Stewart responded, "Uh, it's actually quite easy."
Later, when Wallace argued that a clip about Sarah Palin from the Daily Show was political commentary, Stewart told Wallace, "You're insane... Here's the difference between you and I. I'm a comedian first. My comedy is informed by an ideological background, there's no question about that. But the thing that you will never understand...is that Hollywood, yeah, they're liberal, but that's not their primary motivating force. I'm not an activist. I am a comedian."
"Do I want my voice heard?" Stewart continued later. "Absolutely, that's why I got into comedy. Am I an activist, in your mind? A partisan ideological activist?" Wallace responded, "Yeah." "Okay, then I disagree with you," Stewart said. "You can't understand, because of the world that you live in, that there is not a designed ideological agenda on my part to affect partisan change because that's the soup you swim in. And I appreciate that, I understand it. It reminds me of in ideological regimes, they can't understand that there is free media other places because they receive marching orders."

Weiner Crossdress Pictures Come Out

Bizarre: Weiner had an early taste for taking shocking photographs, as seen here in these new images of him as an 18-year-old   Beleaguered congressman Anthony Weiner is set to face his humiliated wife Huma Abedin after she arrived at the family home in Washington home earlier today.
Democrat leaders hope the pregnant Mrs Abedin will force her scandal-ridden husband to resign - something he has resisted despite calls to quit from his party and President Obama.
Her arrival comes as a fresh set of images emerged demonstrating the shamed congressman's early appetite for exhibitionism as a cross-dressing teenager.
The National Enquirer pictures show Weiner protectively posing in a pair of pantihose and a bra as he smiles cheekily at the camera.
In another photo an oiled Weiner poses in y-fronted swimming trunks in front of a Christmas tree.
The pictures, taken by a college friend in 1982 when he was 18, demonstrate Weiner's reputation at the State University of Plattsburgh as a flamboyant figure.

Gay girl in Damascus is a Hoax

An alleged lesbian dissident blogger from Syria may be a hoax. Reports surfaced that the author may have been writing from Edinburgh, Scotland.

On Saturday, the website “Lezget real,” which had played a role in much of the “A Gay Girl in Damascus” blog’s initial success, posted two links that the blogger had been using to write on the site, both of them located in Edinburgh.

An entry posted on the website on Saturday read that the author “apparently is a 35 year-old lesbian living in Edinburgh, Scotland.”

Back in February, American blogger Paula Brooks corresponded with Amina Arraf, the woman who allegedly wrote the blog on her experiences as a lesbian, anti-regime activist in Damascus, and noticed the woman’s IP address was from Edinburgh, theWashington Post has reported.

According to the Washington Post, “Arraf” later wrote an email to Brooks discussing her plans to study in Britain, which the newspaper said led Brooks to believe that she may have been writing her entries from Scotland all along.

In March, “A Gay Girl in Damascus” became an internet sensation after the popular uprising against the Assad regime broke out. This past week readers began to question the reality of the blog, after an entry on the site written by a woman purporting to be a cousin of Arraf’s, Rania O. Islam, read that the blogger was taken by three plainclothes Syrian state security officers and crammed into a car.

As her story began to garner more attention, reporters and readers began to ask questions about Arraf, and it emerged that no one could confirm having ever met her in person and the picture she had posted on her site is actually of a London woman who said the images were stolen from her Facebook page.

Reporters searching for clues to Arraf’s identity have not been able to find any confirmation that such a woman exists.

Alaska releases Sarah Palin emails

After nearly three years of delay, the state of Alaska has released 24,199 pages of Sarah Palin's emails from her first two years as the state's governor later today.
News organizations have been fighting for access to the emails since 2008, when reporters filed open-records requests to view the messages shortly after John McCain tapped the then-largely unknown governor to be his running mate.
State officials dragged their feet on the requests--in part because of the volume of the data and the complexity of retrieving all of the emails. The messages set for release at 1 p.m. EST include emails from Palin's official state account, as well as a private Yahoo account that she frequently used to communicate with her top aides and her husband, Todd.
According to the state, Palin gave Alaska officials a CD of relevant emails from her Yahoo account.
The messages date from Palin's first days in office in December 2006 through September 2008—a period that covers most of the presidential election, but not her time as McCain's running mate. This release of correspondence also does not include her final tumultuous 10 months in office—Palin resigned in July 2009—though there have been public records requests for those emails as well.
Palin insisted earlier this week that she doesn't believe there's any big news in the emails. "Every rock in the Palin household that could ever be kicked over and uncovered anything, it's already been kicked over," she told "Fox News Sunday."
And indeed, her lawyers were able to review the emails before they were released to the media. According to the state, many of the emails set for release today have been heavily redacted, while 2,275 pages are being withheld for reasons including executive privilege. Another 140 pages are being held back because they were deemed unrelated to state business.
It's unclear if anything in the emails could harm Palin's potential 2012 presidential bid--but the drip, drip, drip pace of the documents' release could potentially prove most damaging. The former governor's emails are being released in printed form, as opposed to electronically. Seventeen news organizations and individuals are in Juneau today to begin combing through the messages, which are spread out among 85 boxes that reportedly weigh 50 pounds each. That means Palin's messages are likely to be more than just a one-day story.
Some media organizations, including the Washington Post and New York Times are looking to "crowdsource" the documents in hopes of funding any nuggets about Palin's time as governor.  MSNBC, Mother Jones, and ProPublica are reportedly working on assembling a database of the emails. Meanwhile the Anchorage Daily News has partnered with ABC News to scan the documents and get them online.
The episodes of most interest in the emails are likely to be Palin's messages during various ethics inquiries during her first term. That includes the scandal known as "Troopergate," in which Palin was accused of pressuring public safety officials to fire her estranged brother-in-law, an Alaska state trooper who was going through a bitter divorce from her sister.
But more than anything, the emails are likely to shed more light on Palin's day-to-day as governor—a time that, in spite of her rise on the national political scene, is still engulfed in plenty of mystery.
