TELEFFLUVIAN QUICKIES

By next TV season, the Inner Toob showcase "As Seen On TV" will have some fresh material to draw from: Rob Lowe as Drew Peterson, the Illinois cop suspected of killing his third and fourth wives will be seen in a new TV movie. Kaley Cuocco will co-star, probably as one of those wives.

~

I should have saved last Monday's ASOTV showcase of Philip II of Spain for later in the week:

June 15
1580 – Philip II of Spain declares William the Silent to be an outlaw.

June 16
1586 – Mary, Queen of Scots, recognizes Philip II of Spain as her heir and successor.

Well, at least as far as June 16 goes, I preferred using Stan Laurel as a birthday salute to my brother AJ.

Sunday night, the season finales of both 'Game Of Thrones' and 'The Killing' were broadcast (on HBO and AMC, respectively). Both shows asked their audiences to toss away their calcified TV viewing expectations - one by killing off the main character an episode shy of the season finale; the other by going the long-form route to focus on only one murder case over the span of the whole season.

'Game Of Thrones' succeeded - I can't wait for Spring 2012 so that I might once more travel through the lands of Westeros again. 'The Killing' did not - instead of wrapping up the case, the producers decided to turn the ending into a cliff-hanger as leverage for a new season, which AMC granted them. (They may not have come right out and said the murder of Rosie Larsen would be solved by season's end, but it was implied and assumed and no effort was made to dispell those beliefs. Fine. But let's see how low the audience figures are when the show returns - I know I'm not returning ever again. I'll keep track via online episode guides only long enough to find out who the true killer was.)

Both shows will get plenty of notice in the 2011 Toobits Awards at the end of the year, but at different ends of the spectrum.....

THE LAST "GAME OF THRONES" PREVIEW FOR SEASON ONE!

Tonight on HBO, at 9 PM ET, the final episode of this first season of 'Game Of Thrones' will air. After the shocking finale of last week's episode, I wonder if the ratings will soar through the roof... or plummet due to the anger of those who hated what happened in Episode 9.

Here's the preview for tonight's episode:

And Entertainment Weekly teases that there's still plenty of time to get rid of yet another favorite character. We'll see.....

SKED ALERT - "GAME OF THRONES" (THE PENULTIMATE EPISODE)

I didn't get any notice this week from the PR people of HBO about clips and stills from Episode 9 of 'Game Of Thrones' which airs tonight on the premium network. I hope I didn't insult them in any way with my previous posts on the show. 'Game Of Thrones' is easily my favorite series of 2011 and it will figure heavily in the Toobits Awards at the end of the year.

It could be that my theories of how the land of Westeros called the planet Mondas home had something to do with that. Or more likely, the series is doing so well by now that they don't need to have bloggers like me trumpet its arrival.

No matter. HBO does have the preview video up on YouTube:

The episode is called "Baelor".......

Episode 9 of 'Game of Thrones' premieres tonight on HBO at 9 PM, EDT.

And if the show follows the HBO tradition, the first season finale will be pre-empted next week.....

PREVIOUSLY (UNSEEN) ON "COMMUNITY".....

The latest episode of 'Community' is a contender for a 2011 Toobits Award as Best Contribution to the Toobworld Concept.

"Paradigms Of Human Memory" was a take-off on that old TV cliche of the clip show, in which a series would save money by putting together a lot of clips in the form of flashbacks.

But in this case, most of the clips seen were from episodes of 'Community' that never happened - at least on our TV screens.

However, we in the audience of the Trueniverse never see everything that happens to our favorite TV characters, and as Martha Stewart would say, that's a good thing. Did you really want to see Hurley taking a bleep in the jungle on 'Lost'?
The classic example has always been the fact that in 'Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan', Khan Noonian Singh says that he remembers Pavel Chekov from his time on board the Enterprise. But in the episode "Space Seed", their paths never crossed as far as we could see. In fact, Walter Koenig wasn't even in that episode!
So the 'Community' episode of "Paradigms Of Memory" is a worthy example because of how many examples it serves up.

DOUBLE VISION: "PEGGY" & JUREK

Despite the grim surroundings at his job for USA Prime Credit, "Peggy" (winner of a 2010 Toobits Award!) seems to be a rather cheerful sort. That's why I don't think he knows his twin brother Jurek was murdered in Europe. He may never know, because Jurek was probably using an alias at the time. (The man who killed him, however, knew his true identity.) "Peggy" may also have known that his brother was involved in illegal activities (working for Alexei Volkoff) and cut off ties with him long before. So when "Peggy" does eventually find out - and you know it'll happen off-screen - it may not have any effect on his cheery disposition while "answering" the phones for USA Prime Credit.

"MODERN FAMILY" & THE OSCARS: A NEW CROSSOVER!

'Modern Family' showed up in an ABC commercial to promote the Academy Awards for this year. And it was produced to look like a scene from the series itself.

As far as Toobworld Central is concerned, this blipvert promo actually was the show, and as such it's a leading Toobits Award contender for 2011.

MALICK IN WONDERLAND

In order to deflate a lot of Zonks, Toobworld Central had to concede that a lot of TV shows that we watch in the Trueniverse are also TV shows in Toobworld. Most of the time they are adaptations or re-enactments of the "real life" events depicted in the actual TV shows. 'The Brady Bunch', 'Gilligan's Island', 'Happy Days', and even 'Star Trek' are examples of this.

Some TV shows have their titles invoked in other TV series, but those shows have such generic titles they could be about anything (so long as no other details are revealed. 'Cold Case', 'Law & Order', 'General Hospital', 'CSI' - these are good examples of that. (Although it seems like they can't just mention 'CSI: Miami' without throwing in mentions - and even parodies! - of David Caruso.)

We've even seen clips from these TV shows within TV shows, the classic being a scene from the televersion of 'Murphy Brown'. As seen on 'Seinfeld', that also starred Candice Bergen as the reporter, just like in the real world, with Cosmo Kramer as her latest secretary.

Most recently, I wrote about the excerpt from
'Burke's Law' starring Gene Barry as seen in an episode of 'Burke's Law' starring Gene Barry!

Those and others like them were all quick clips, mostly serving as punchlines. But now, this may be the second biggest example ever, one that ran for several scenes throughout an hour-long soap opera. This is about the crossover between the sitcom 'Hot In Cleveland' and 'All My Children'.....

It's been a running gag on 'Hot In Cleveland' that fading soap opera queen Victoria Chase is bitter rivals with Susan Lucci of 'All My Children'. 'AMC' and its plots have been mentioned in other TV shows in the past, so we can't dismiss it as a generic TV show title, like it was a reality TV series or something. Toobworld Central had to accept that the televersion of 'All My Children' was a dramatization of the "real-life" events in Pine Valley. (When the show stars a soap opera diva who went for so long without Emmy award recognition, it was bound to be a magnet for pop culture references. Hey, had she won early and often for playing Erica Kane, Lucci might never have been asked to host 'Saturday Night Live'!)

Two episodes of 'Hot In Cleveland' were focused on the behind-the-scenes activities at a taping of "All My Children' with appearances by Darnell Williams, Michael E. Knight (more on him in a later post), and of course, Susan Lucci. Lucci played up her role beautifully, not afraid to show that she was different (maybe) from her true persona - as Victoria called her, "a conniving tea-cup poodle". I always enjoy seeing celebrities not afraid to portray themselves in a bad light on TV. Kevin Bacon on an episode last year of 'Bored To Death' comes to mind, but the all-time best was the late great Lloyd Bridges on 'Ned & Stacy", where he played himself as a kleptomaniac neo-Nazi cross-dresser!

Victoria Chase had gone back to Los Angeles to film a guest appearance on 'All My Children', and we got to see the blocking of that scene and its catastrophic consequences. When all was said and done, however, that hospital bed scene was scrapped and we learned that a new scene was written for her. That's proof right there that even though the Toobworld 'All My Children' was based on the "real life" events depicted in the actual show, sometimes characters and scenes are created with no basis in "fact".

And then, with the sitcom's two-parter over, the next day had the crossover's finale on the soap opera itself.....

Do you remember how I've stated in the past that
the credits have no bearing on what we actually see in the TV Universe?

This is the exception: With that opening credit letting us know that Victoria Chase was the special guest star, the show was also announcing that we weren't watching the Trueniverse 'All My Children'. The following hour was probably a one-time only broadcast of a fictional episode from within the TV Universe.

And since several citizens of the Pine Valley population were depicted in other scenes, O'Bviously this show within a show went to great lengths to find actors who looked exactly like the people they were playing....... (Leave me my delusions, please.)

This wasn't the first time in Toobworld history in which the actual show was abandoned for the show within a show. The best example is that of the interregnum between Clayton Moore's appearances as 'The Lone Ranger'. Those episodes which starred John Hart are actually the Toobworld episodes of the show which everybody refers to when the the classic Western is mentioned in other shows, like 'Happy Days' and 'The Fall Guy'. (John Hart appeared as himself in episodes from both shows.) John Hart was the TV Lone Ranger; the real Lone Ranger looked like the actor Clayton Moore. (Hart must have made such an impression as the televersion of the Lone Ranger that hundreds of years in the future, a Time Agent would be named after him - Jon Hart, as seen in 'Torchwood'.)

So Wendie Malick played Victoria Chase playing Gertie Stein, who was supposed to work for Erica Kane as a maid and then served her as a bartender in the bar owned by Erica's daugher. And in both cases, Erica got her fired. This was probably due to Susan Lucci's influence over the writers, giving her this on-air opportunity to humiliate Victoria (knowing that many in the audience would confuse the actress with the character and thus Victoria came off as a loser.) Lucci was probably also responsible for Victoria being saddled with a name like Gertie Stein. She probably wanted to equate Victoria in the minds of viewers with the unattractive looks of the famous writer Gertrude Stein. By Friday, everything was back to normal for the Trueniverse audience. The last episode of that week's 'All My Children' strip was the one that showed the "real" people of Pine Valley. If you wanted to see any more of the fictional version of the show, you'll probably have to keep watching shows like 'Hot In Cleveland' which might refer back to it. (But then, at best you may get just audio from the show.)

So thanks just to that one little screen credit for Victoria Chase, this was an actual crossover and not just actresses appearing on each other's show. And more than likely it was audacious enough to best any other candidates to be the Crossover of the Year at the 2011 Toobits Awards (to be held in January.)

Thanks to my friends Mark & Michael for making sure I saw that episode of 'All My Children'.....

CROSSOVER OF THE YEAR?

I'm not really crazy about the idea, but based on what I've written in the past, the "crossover" between 'Hot In Cleveland' and 'All My Children' which played out over the last two weeks actually does work (in a convoluted way). And begrudingly, it may be hard to top when it comes to the 2011 Toobits Awards winner for Best Crossover of the Year......

NUMBERS RUNNING: THE LATEST CAPTCHAS

'Lost' may be gone from the airwaves, but "The Numbers" sequence lives on. Here are some recent additions to my collection of "The Numbers" to be found in other TV shows and commercials, past and present:

FOUR
From an Allstate blipvert featuring one of the best new TV characters, and a winner of a 2010 Toobits Award, Mayhem:

EIGHT & SIXTEEN
This was stock footage used in the 'Burke's Law' episode "Who Killed April?".......

SIXTEEN
It's not a clean frame grab, I got it from a YouTube copy of an advertisement, so it wasn't on screen long, but here's Dr. Temperance 'Bones' Brennan on the sixteenth floor of a building.

Also, it was used in a commercial for a Canon camera in which a young couple were given the chance to go back to Italy and recreate a photo that didn't come out right on their old camera:

TWENTY-THREE
That was the number of the building owned by Marsha Deakin in which Daisy Steiner and Tim Bisley lived, as seen in 'Spaced'......

"OFFICE"/"OFFICE" O'BSERVATIONS

We had to wait seven seasons for it, but it was well worth the wait - Michael Scott, the main character of the American version of 'The Office' met David Brent of the original British version:

As Emperor Palpatine said, everything proceeded exactly as I had foreseen it. I knew they would literally bump into each other - but I thought it might have been at a paper convention or something of the like. I also knew it would be short and sweet, because anything longer would have eventually felt labored. Never planned on it happening during the opening tease, but that also made sense - keep it apart from the main stories.

And yet even so, I was left wanting more. In the end, I guess that means it was successful.

The length of the scene ultimately didn't matter, because it still held massive ramifications for Toobworld and justifies having both series in the same dimension. As such, I think we have already locked in the winner for Best Crossover of the Year in the 2011 Toobits Awards!

THE LOST TOOBITS AWARD

When I posted the 2010 Toobits Awards, I forgot one category that will probably never happen again:

BEST MUSIC VIDEO CROSSOVER
'Cougar Town' - "Dancing In The Dark"

The video is over two decades old, but that fits right into the timeline for 'Cougar Town'. We're not seeing Courtney Cox onstage dancing with the Boss; it's actually Jules Cobb of West Gulfhaven, Florida. (Although I don't know what her maiden name was. Anybody?)

Here's how we found out:

Jules and her son Travis are talking about high school accomplishments.....

Jules:

The only thing that matters is that you got through it. It’s not like I made some big splash in high school.
Travis:

Really!? Because I got your yearbook…
Jules:

Well, we don’t need to look through that, I mean, I’m barely in it.
Travis:

Look—inside cover, you as the prom queen.
Jules:

Yeah, I got 98% of the vote, but, you know, whatever. And it’s only one thing. It doesn’t mean I was super cool.
Travis:

Is this you dancing on stage with Bruce Springsteen?
Jules:

Yeah, that was super cool.
[she starts dancing like they did in the video]
Travis:
Stop it.
Jules:

I’m sorry.
[she turns and dances out of the room]

I wrote about it back in May here at Inner Toob.

So why don't we also relive that old memory....?

THE 2010 TOOBITS AWARDS PART ONE

2010 TOOBITS
It's that time of year again, when we all make lists and think back over the past year, in whatever field of interest concerns us, and chronicle the high points and the lows. For the past few years I've been presenting this compilation as an awards show, the Toobits, which of course celebrates my two bits about Toobworld.

As it is with any such list you'll find in TV columns across the country these last few weeks, these are my opinions. You're welcome to your own and I hope you'll share them, but I'm sticking to my weapons of choice. (It could be you won't see something that was a favorite of yours because I just never got around to seeing it. There's only so much time in the world - even for a do-nothing-else-anyway sort like me! - and I've only got the two eyes, even if they do operate independently of each other at times.)

Unlike the Emmy Awards which will just keep handing out trophies to some shows forever, only shows, characters and what-not that debuted in 2010 can be considered. (And by "debuted", I mean that which I first came in contact with in 2010. It could be a few years old, but if it's my first time seeing it, it's new.)

This one-time-only rule includes characters who have been recast (although there are two Recastaway awards); those are still the same characters who already exist in Toobworld. (But there were a few notable appearances that deserved honorable mention, and they get it.)

So without further ado, let's have at it:

BEST NEW TV SERIES
COMEDY:

'The Ricky Gervais Show'
DRAMA:

'Rubicon'

BEST TV MOVIE
'Sherlock' - "The Great Game"

It is technically part of a series, but as each episode runs 90 minutes, I consider each one to be a TV movie.

BEST MINI-SERIES
'The Pacific'

BEST IMPORT
Comedy:

'The In-Betweeners'
Drama:

'Sherlock' & 'Luther'

BEST EPISODE, ANY GENRE
"Eleventh Hour" - 'Doctor Who'

An exciting introduction to not only the new Doctor, but also to Amy and Rory, new aliens, and a new TARDIS interior.....

BEST TWO-PART EPISODE
"Death of the Doctor" - 'The Sarah Jane Adventures'
(with the Doctor and Jo Grant)

This will prove to be very important to the overall mythos of the Doctor - at least in Television - not only for the return of the Doctor and a re-introduction to Jo Grant, but also for the revelation about the Doctor's ability to regenerate.

BEST SERIES RETURN
'Futurama'

BEST SEASON FINALE
'Doctor Who'

It had everything - humor, pathos, adventure, romance, death, rebirth, sacrifice, and fezzes. It was silly and sad, a roller coaster of a fairy tale!

BEST SERIES FINALE
'Lost' & 'Ashes To Ashes'

Best of all is that they shared a common theme about Limbo, which can unite them - along with the A2A prequel, the original 'Life On Mars' and the old Richard Widmark series based on his movie, 'Madigan'.......

BEST CLIFF-HANGER
'White Collar'

I'll just say that it happens right after this shot. It's just a shame that the promos for the new season give it all away......

WORST SERIES CONCLUSION
'Happy Town' & 'Persons Unknown'

As the audience numbers failed to support these shows, they had to limp to their finales online. And neither one gave a decent send-off, as if they both thought they had any chance of renewal. ('Rubicon' was guilty of the same thing, but there was some hope of renewal at first.)

BEST SPIN-OFF
'Law & Order: Los Angeles'

I didn't personally care very much for the Left Coast continuation, but it does help expand Toobworld....

BEST SEQUEL
"New Man In Charge" - 'Lost'

It's the way of the future - DVDs will play a significant role in expanding the TV Universe.

BEST REMAKE
'Sherlock'

It was brilliant of Moffat and Gatiss to modernize the canon and yet everything about the basic dynamic - characters, methods of detection, storylines - felt true to the original. Yes, it's a massive Zonk, but we'll deal with that before the awards presentations are over......

BEST PILOT
'Human Target'

BEST REVIVED SERIES
'Dollhouse'

Unfortunately, like 'Enterprise' before it, this was a case of too little, too late......

BEST CROSSOVER
'Warehouse 13' - 'Eureka'
Even if they weren't on the same network, this would have been a natural. And that's due more to the characters than the story, which is why we also have this category:

BEST CROSSOVER PLOTLINE
'Life Unexpected' - 'One Tree Hill'

Even though the shows were across the country from each other, there was a logical reason for 1TH characters to show up on 'Life Unexpected' - to play at a concert sponsored by the radio station where an LU character worked.

BEST TRIVIAL CROSSOVER
A tech manual used by Abed in 'Community' had "SUNNYDALE" written on its spine.

WORST TRIVIAL CROSSOVER
Characters on 'Cougar Town' get their coffee fix from Coffee Bucks - just like the characters from 'Scrubs'. One problem: in the episode "Stop Dragging My Heart Around", the characters were watching 'Scrubs' as well.....

BEST INTER-DIMENSIONAL CROSSOVER
'Family Guy' - 'Real Time with Bill Maher'

FIRST CROSSOVER OF THE YEAR
'Doctor Who' - "The End Of Time (Part Two)" with 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' and 'Torchwood'

FIRST THEORETICAL CROSSOVER OF THE YEAR
'Better Off Ted' with 'Doctor Who'
There was a dead Dalek in the background in the Veridian Dynamics basement. It's probably the same one that would be later sold to Henry Van Statton, seen in the 'Doctor Who' episode "Dalek"......

BEST THEORETICAL CROSSOVER OF THE YEAR
'The Walking Dead' with 'Dead Set'

Welcome to the Zombie TV dimension!

BEST CHRISTMAS-THEMED EPISODE OF THE YEAR
DRAMA:
'Doctor Who' - "A Christmas Carol"
COMEDY
'Community' - "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas"
(My only complaint on that one was the episode title. To keep it close to the general theme of school-related titles, I would have called it "Christmas Break". That would also tie in to Abed's break from reality.....)

WORST CHRISTMAS-THEMED EPISODE OF THE YEAR
'Psych' - "The Polarizing Express"

Blerg.

THE 2010 TOOBITS AWARDS PART ONE-A

Originally, I thought this would be a four-part series this year, but by the time I got ready to do Part One, I realized that segment was too large. Hence, the Part One-A.....

BEST COMMERCIAL
USPS Creepy Clown Doll

WORST COMMERCIAL
Quizno's with the kitties

I won't torture you by running the video or even showing a frame grab from it.....

BEST PUBLIC SERVICE COMMERCIAL
The cast of HIMYM raising awareness for the TJ Martell Foundation and their fight against cancer

BEST COMMERCIAL/SERIES CROSSOVER
(3 way tie)
Honda Accord Crosstour with 'Chuck' and the Winter Olympics
(starring Elle, Morgan, and Captain Awesome)

'30 Rock' with 'Dr. Pepper'

Geico Caveman and 'Deadliest Catch'

BEST COMMERCIAL CROSSOVER WITH A DIFFERENT MEDIUM
"Back To The Future"/Scream Awards

BEST COMMERCIAL CROSSOVER IN A DIFFERENT FORMAT
'Eastbound & Down' with Tubes trainers

I consider it the "best" because it works perfectly for me. I didn't like 'Eastbound & Down' (and can't believe it was renewed!) and I have no interest in fancy sneakers.

WORST COMMERCIAL CROSSOVER
The use of the "Free To Be You And Me" theme song in the Target advert

Mostly because of news reports about Target's business practices and then having them sully one of my favorite TV memories of the early 70's.

BEST ONLINE CROSSOVER

http://www.kabletown.com/

BEST ADAPTATION FROM ANOTHER UNIVERSE (aka MEDIUM)
BOOK to TV
"Murder On The Orient Express"
The producers of 'Poirot' even improved on Dame Agatha's book by combining two of the characters, which made for a more believable and tighter plot point.

COMIC BOOK to TV
'Human Target'

BEST MOVIE THAT SHOULD BE ADAPTED INTO A TV SHOW
"Inception"

BEST BOOK THAT SHOULD BE ADAPTED INTO A TV SHOW
"Jim Anthony, Super Detective: The Hunters"

BEST TIE-IN
"Crossovers" Volumes 1 & 2 by Win Scott Eckert

The Wold Newton Universe covers much more than just TV shows - books, short stories, comic books, comic strips, movies, radio shows.... But this two-volume chronology is an excellent source of information that shows how they all tie in together.

BEST HISTORICAL RECREATION
'The Pacific'

Runner-Up:
'Boardwalk Empire'
Nucky Thompson throws it all out of whack, but there were still great appearances by Lucky Luciano, Warren G. Harding, Sophie Tucker, Eddie Cantor, and Houdini's brother.

BEST SENSE OF ONE'S OWN HISTORY
'The Sarah Jane Adventures' - "Death of the Doctor" (Part Two)
Thanks to the Memory Weave, we were treated to the memories of Sarah Jane and Jo Grant about their individual adventures with the Doctor. Plus, later they caught us up to date on what happened to various other former Companions.

BEST BLEND OF TOOBWORLD AND REAL WORLD CELEBRITY
'Bored To Death' (Kevin Bacon in "42 Down")
It's always a treat when a celebrity pokes fun at his own reputation.

BEST CLASSIC TV EXPERIENCE
'Colonel March Of Scotland Yard'
I get the feeling the producers of this old series with Boris Karloff didn't really want to delve into the realm of the supernatural like the original source material. In fact, the mysteries are rather bland. (Karloff is a delight, however, as the one-eyed Scotland Yard investigator.) But this show could have been so much more, the 'X-Files' or 'Fringe' of its day.

Still, it was an enjoyable excursion into Toobworld's past......
