ART OF THE DALZIELS

In 1932, Lord Peter Wimsey and his valet Bunter were in Scotland on holiday when they assisted the police in a case dubbed "The Five Red Herrings". Among the policemen involved was Sgt. Dalziel (which is pronounced somewhat like "Dee-el").

It's the Toobworld Central theory of relateeveety that he was the grandfather of Yorkshire Detective Superintendant Andy Dalziel, as seen in the series 'Dalziel & Pascoe'. (From Wikipedia: Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel is described by the actor who portrays him [Warren Clarke] as 'a perfect pig', who is politically incorrect and often insensitive. He likes to do things in the old fashioned way.)
It's standard procedure in Toobworld Central to use an actor's birth year as the same for the character he plays - unless otherwise stated by the script or by the time period in which the character appears. Therefore, Andy Dalziel was probably born circa 1947, just as Warren
Clarke was.

By 1932, Sgt Dalziel could have had a son nearly old enough himself to soon get married and perhaps then move to Yorkshire. For some reason, the name of Andy Dalziel's father is engraved on a memorial in Sheffield. It may have had something to do with World War Two.

Of course, the scripts for the 'Dalziel And Pascoe' series could bleep this all up. Andy's father could have shown up, looking nothing like the actor who played the Sergeant; mention might have been made as to his profession. But it would have to be something from the TV series that would derail this theory. Whatever happened in the novels doesn't apply, even though it's the stated intention of the author.

What happens in the novels is part of the literary universe only, and that's more the purview of Fletcher Pratt and L. Sprague DeCamp of the "Incompleat Enchanter" series. Toobworld is the TV Universe and never the twain should meet. (Especially since the novels apparently have a sci-fi bent not seen in the series - or so I'm informed by Wikipedia.)

And based on the liberties taken in most TV adaptations from their bookish sources, they never have that much in common anyway. (For a good example, read "At Bertram's Hotel" by Agatha Christie, and then watch the second TV adaptation of the stories, featuring Geraldine McEwan as Miss Jane Marple.......)

I suppose by extension through the connection to Lord Peter Wimsy, this theory of relateeveety could be considered a minor part of the Wold Newton Universe as well.  But I'll leave that up to Win Scott Eckert to decide; the WNU is his bailiwick and he does a fantastic job in maintaining it.  (Far better than I do with Toobworld!)

BLAKE LIVELY CAUGHT IN THE NUDE!!!

Here goes another celebrity who fell victim to her own fame. There are now nude photos of Blake Lively which surfaced on the internet today.

Check them if you want here: http://unratedperez.com/2011-05-31-gossip-girl-star-blake-lively-rocked-by-naked-photos-leak

There's nothing else to really say about this, but Blake's publicist Leslie Sloan claims the photos are fake, YES 100% FAKE. Blake claims she has never taken naked photos of herself [really?!]. Most of the pictures are of the "starlet" concealed by the phone, and with Blake's blooming career and "budding romance" with Leonardo DiCaprio, there's no denying her life is on the fast track. I guess we'll see where this pans out, but when does nude photos go anything but boost a celebs career?

THE KILLING, 1.10 – "I'll Let You Know When I Get There"

I think I'd have liked "I'll Let You Know When I Get There" if it had come earlier in the season, but considering the fact it's essentially an alternate-episode 4 (now the Bennet Ahmed dead-end has come to an end after a ridiculous half-season spent on it), I can't shake my frustrations with The Killing's narrative structure. It's also becoming more noticeable just how much DNA this show shares with Twin Peaks. The surface level similarities were obvious (small town in Washington state, dead teenager, ominous musical score), but this episode even ended with Linden (Mireille Enos) discovering the existence of a casino that immediately reminded me of One Eyed Jack's from Twin Peaks. Maybe it's just another coincidence, but I can't shake the feeling that this show is in many ways a remake of Twin Peaks--minus the overt strangeness.

Overview:

  • Bennet's (Brandon Jay McLaren) beaten body was discovered and taken to hospital, where he's touch and go. Stan (Brent Sexton), realizing his mistake when he returned home to see wife Mitch (Michelle Forbes), turned himself into the police and was jailed.
  • Linden and Holder turn their attention away from Bennet now he's been proven innocent, with Linden making a special effort to see Richmond (Billy Campbell) and tell him personally that Bennet's been exonerated.
  • Richmond's political campaign received a much-needed jolt, as they can now promote the fact Richmond stuck to his guns and refused to believe an innocent man was guilty until proven so. A press conference was called, with Richmond denouncing the vigilante justice meted out to Bennet and resolving to reinstate the All-Star program that Mayor Adams shutdown. Later, Richmond made plans to reduce budgets in the City Council.
  • Linden returned to Regi's (Annie Corley) houseboat and heard that her son Jack (Liam James) has been misbehaving with friends, putting Regi in an awkward position. Angry and disappointed, Linden moves out of Regi's boat with Jack and into a motel.
  • Stan is interviewed in jail by Linden, who is now pursuing the theory his mobster past was somehow involved in Rosie's murder. Stan denies the possibility.
  • Holder goes to see Stan's best friend, Belko (Brendan Sexton III), who was also involved with the Kovarsky mobsters. Belko denies all knowledge of Stan's actions in attacking Bennet
  • Linden was called by a cab driver who has video-evidence of Rosie travelling from the Bennet house just after 10pm on the night she disappeared. Linden and Holder reviewed the cab's tape and saw Rosie arrive home at 10.37pm, before noticing a light in her assumedly empty house was turned off as she arrived—meaning someone was in the house when she came home.
  • Mitch's sister Terry (Jamie Anne Allman) revealed that Belko has keys to the Larsen home, so he became the new prime suspect. Linden and Holder investigated Belko's alibi that he was home with his mother by going to meet with her at his apartment. Inside they discover numerous photos of Rosie taped to Belko's bedroom ceiling and notice that Belko's mother dresses provocatively for someone of her age.
  • Belko is taken in for questioning and eventually admits that he helped Stan beat-up Bennet, and that he in the Larsen house when Rosie came home, but only hid because he was breaking Mitch's house rules by being upstairs. Belko doesn't confess to killing her, but instead reveals he heard her talking on the phone to someone, saying "Adela, I'll be there", before leaving again.
  • A City Hall intern found a video-clip of Richmond shaking hands with Rosie during his campaign, which Jamie (Eric Ladin) decides to bury in case it's used to link Richmond to her murder again in the eyes of the electorate.
  • Mitch received a phone call at the family business telling her a cheque has bounced and there's no money in their savings account to cover it.
  • The next morning, Linden is out jogging when she noticed a ferry called "ADELA", which has a departure time of 11.45pm which fits with the last movements of Rosie. She boards the ferry and soon notices a sign for the Wapi Eagle Casino with a logo that matches the key chain they found on Rosie's body.

Suspects:

  • I was getting worried we were going to spend another few episodes investigating Belko, before dropping him as a suspect, so I was glad they quickly moved past him. Mind you, it struck me as odd they just accepted his story. The guy's clearly got a fixation on Rosie, a childish bedroom (check out the wallpaper), and weird connection with the Larsen's. If this was a real investigation, I'm not convinced they'd have ditched Belko so quickly and moved into finding "Adela."
  • The Kovarsky mob were mentioned quite a few times, so it's still very possible they're involved here somehow. Was Rosie involved with the mob somehow? Did she learn something about them that meant she had to be killed? Do the gangsters run the Wapi Eagle Casino?

Summation:

This was a good episode, reminding me of what I was enjoying about The Killing when it first started. It had some actual movement and momentum to it, and it was just a relief to move on from the interminable Bennet storyline—finally! I'm not particularly moved by Stan's imprisonment, mainly because that character hasn't been very sympathetic for a very long time. And it still really confused me that so many major clues are arriving very late in the game. Why has the cab driver waited over a week

It's also slightly annoying that the avenues of investigation here (Belko, Kovarsky) are suspects the viewers at home were allowed to consider weeks ago, meaning Linden and Holder feel like they're playing catchup with the viewers at home. They should be the ones leading us through this story, but I actually feel more informed than Linden--probably because I am, given how the TV show can let us see people and things she can't. I think there's a way to tell this story much better, basically—but I'm pleased we're close to the finish, as I can't deny being very excited to discover who killed Rosie. If we are going to be told this season, of course...

Poll: who's your favourite fictional investigator?

It's been awhile, so here comes another of those mega-polls that gives everyone a headache! This time, I'm after your favourite fictional investigator/detective. As usual, the poll's options below are extensive, but I'm sure I missed a great many.

In a change to the usual procedure, you can now select FIVE favourites. The "other vote" only allows for ONE answer, but you can actually add as many as you want by separating your answers with a comma (eg: answer 1, answer 2, answer 3). I will happily count five unique answers in the "other" field.

Feel free to discuss your answers in the comments below. This poll will close on 4 June @5PM GMT, with the results posted here shortly after.

What are Eye Floaters?

What are Eye Floaters?

Every weekday, a CNNHealth expert doctor answers a viewer question. On Mondays, it's pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Shu.
Asked by Paul from New York
I'm 39 years old and have had a few floaters in both eyes for as long as I can remember. I go to the eye doctor every year for my glasses but forget to ask about these floaters. What causes them? Do I need to worry?

Expert answer
Thanks for your question. Floaters, or little spots or thread-like objects, can be seen particularly well if your eyes are moving and looking at something bright, such as a page on a computer screen or a blue sky.
Most of the time, they do not cause any problems. For more details, I consulted Dr. Ravi Goel, a board-certified ophthalmologist at Regional Eye Associates in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and an instructor with the Wills Eye Institute Cataract and Primary Eye Care Service in Philadelphia.
Goel describes the following analogy about floaters: Imagine the central part of the eye (the vitreous gel) as being a solid ball of ice or solid clear gelatinous material when you're born.
As you grow older, that ball of ice starts to turn into a liquid and starts to pull on the retina, the innermost part of the back of the eyeball. This process can lead to flashes (from the tugging of the gel-like material along the nerve layer of the retina) or floaters (cells that float in the central part of the eye and are seen by the central retina, called the macula).
Flashes and floaters may also be a sign of an ophthalmic migraine, which Goel says is similar to an aura of a migraine headache but without the pain.
The retina examination can be completely normal and ophthalmologists will send patients for a medical evaluation. Patients are typically evaluated for underlying headache, which may include cardiac and carotid evaluation.
If the gel-like material tugs too hard, there may be a sudden shower of floaters, which is a sign of a possible retinal detachment. This can happen in patients who have had recent trauma or surgery, are nearsighted (myopic), or who have sudden loss of central or peripheral vision, flashes or hazy vision.
These patients should be evaluated immediately. Goel recommends that anyone with floaters receive an initial ophthalmic consultation that includes pupil dilation - an evaluation that it sounds like you have already had.
Patients should review their symptoms and also possible triggers (such as coffee, chocolate and stress) that might suggest a migraine. It can be helpful to keep a journal of repeat episodes.
When a floater-like episode begins, Goel suggests immediately covering each eye to determine if it occurs in one eye or both, and documenting the time of day, activity and possible stressing events.
If you have any of the concerning symptoms or have further questions, be sure to consult your ophthalmologist. Good luck!

Some "Hobbit" Casting News!

Obviously, most of this news has been confirmed for a while, but I've been offline. So here it is, Orlando Bloom has been confirmed to be returning to the role of Legolas for "The Hobbit" films. This news was confirmed by Peter Jackson via his facebook page. It's not yet been confirmed if his part in the films will be big or if they'll just be small cameos.
Another "Sherlock" star has joined the cast too, that being Sherlock Holmes himself, Benedict Cumberbatch. There's no word on which character he will be playing, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.
And the final cast member is none other than Stephen Fry, who'll be starring in Guy Richie's "Sherlock Holmes 2". Fry will be playing the role of The Master Of Laketown.

Vaughn also said that he'd love to (someday) get the chance to direct his own "BOND" film, obviously with Fassbender in the lead role.

SUPER-SIX LIST: LIFE GOES ON

With Ted Buckland, formerly of 'Scrubs', showing up in Hawaii on the season finale of 'Cougar Town', we got yet another affirmation of one of the basic tenets of Toobworld - just because a TV show may be cancelled, that doesn't mean the lives of its characters have ended. Usually they continue, but out of sight of the audience from the Trueniverse. Occasionally, however, they reappear in a totally different show where we can get reacquainted with them and catch up on what they've been doing during those days of their lives.

So here's a Super Six List of TV characters who reappeared in other shows - for the most part, these shows had no connection to their previous home series.

1] DETECTIVE JOHN MUNCH
From 'Homicide: Life On The Street' to 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'

There was a crossover history between H:LOTS and the mothership of the L&O franchise, and on a personal level it turned out that NYPD Detective Jerry Briscoe once dated one of the Munchkin's wives. When the Baltimore series ended, Munch was dumped by his current wife and he decided to retire from the force there and move to New York City, where he got a job with the SVU.

John Munch is the Crossover King of Toobworld, having also appeared in 'The X-Files', 'The Beat', 'The Wire', working undercover on 'Arrested Development' and in the Tooniverse thanks to 'The Simpsons'.

2] ALAN BRADY
From 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' to 'Mad About You'
There was a span of over thirty years between the show biz legend's appearances in the main Toobworld. (We prefer to ignore his foray into the Tooniverse.) But the years had not diminished his acerbic megalomania. Thanks to Paul Buchman hiring him to narrate a documentary on TV comedy, we learned about some of the salacious details in his Catskills past, as well as getting confirmation about Milton Berle's... talents. ("It's true....!")

3] KOR, KOLOTH, & KANG
From 'Star Trek' to 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'

The first three Klingons in the 'Star Trek' franchise, these three Ancients reunited with Dax, their Trill blood-brother (now symbiotically housed in Jadzia) to exact revenge on an alien villain who murdered their god-child. Although they were successful, two of the three didn't make it; that's all I'm sayin'.

The time span between their appearances was about the same as that of Alan Brady's - in real time, that is. In Toobworld time, over eighty years passed before we saw them again. And it then took an episode of 'Enterprise' to splain why they looked differently from their original appearances.

4] CINNAMON CARTER, JOE MANNIX, & BEN MATLOCK
From 'Mission: Impossible' to 'Diagnosis Murder'
From 'Mannix' to 'Diagnosis Murder'
From 'Matlock' to 'Diagnosis Murder'
In its framework as a medical drama, 'Diagnosis Murder' was mostly a murder mystery. And thanks to writers like Lee Goldberg, there were some crossovers with other TV series. When the father of one of Dr. Sloan's team turned out to be a spy and in trouble, they consulted with Cinnamon who had long since retired from service with the IMF. When private eye Joe Mannix had to re-investigate an old case from his own series, he turned to his personal physician to help tie up the loose ends. (Mark Sloan treated Mannix for all those gun shots and conks to the head. One thing you don't want to see in Toobworld - the shaved head of Joe Mannix!)

And finally, Ben Matlock reluctantly traveled to California from Georgia for Mark Sloan's help, even though the doctor once gave him bad financial advice (which led to Matlock always wearing those cheap suits and noshing on hot dogs.) Within the Toobworld reality, I found it strange that Matlock never noticed Dr. Mark Sloan's resemblance to a judge he knew who had committed a murder......

5] COLONEL WILHELM KLINK & THE PENGUIN
From 'Hogan's Heroes' to 'Batman'

From 'Batman' to 'The Monkees'

There's no connection between these two, really, save that they were both cameos outside their expected venues which eventually connect to each other. Klink showed up in the 1960's in a building which the dynamic duo was scaling. Since he looked no older than he did when he was incompetently in charge of a POW camp more than twenty years before, it's the Toobworld Central theory that he served as the guinea pig for the suspended animation process that was later used to freeze the Fuehrer (as seen in 'The Adventures of Fu Manchu' and 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.')
As for the Penguin, it looks as though he once again escaped from the Gotham Penitentiary and then traveled to Hollywood for a bit of relaxation before once again attempting a crime spree in Gotham City.

6] CAPTAIN KANGAROO
From 'The Captain Kangaroo Show' to 'Day By Day' and 'Murphy Brown'
His own show was no longer entertaining the small fry in the morning - too much advertising revenue could be made instead from talk shows and to hell with the kids! But the Captain still was able to serve as an ambassador at large for their concerns across the country. (Even if his noble intentions were twisted for Murphy Brown's own needs.)

I had to draw the line at some point or it wouldn't have been a Super Six List.  And even then, I cheated with the entry for Colonel Klink and the Penguin, maybe even with the Klingons.  But I could also have added in Sarah Jane Smith, from 'Doctor Who' to 'K-9 And Company' to 'The Sarah Jane Adventures'.  But 'Doctor Who' gets a lot of coverage in this blog so I thought it best to give a showcase to the others.
